The UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons comes into effect on January 22, 2021. We speak with Dr Ruth Mitchell who was a recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize for her work on this campaign. Dr Mitchell is a neurosurgeon and co-chair of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Australia.
A lot of people coming from an Australian context say, ‘that seems like a very worthy cause, but what’s it got to do with Australia?’ I think it’s critical that we understand the legacy of British nuclear testing on unceded sovereign Aborginal land.
