Resources available

What You Need

  • Think about what headings you want to include: Education, Work Experience, Research, Volunteer Work, Hobbies?
  • Reflect on your relevant experience and determine how you can convey this experience in succinct manner
  • Select a colour theme that ensures bold and bright headers surrounded by white space to create contrast
  • Under education/research, include relevant awards or experience that would indicate you have the competence to take on tasks
  • You may choose to include the contact details of professional/academic referees at the end of your CV who can verify your experience, qualifications and competencies

Do

  • Put your most relevant experience at the top of the page - this is a competency-based CV rather than a chronological CV
  • Tailor your skills and experience to what your supervisor is asking for a. What skills would they require? What qualities would they want from someone on their team? Would your attributes and competencies align with this team and their work?
  • Write in succinct bullet points
  • Use bold headers to divide your relevant experience from something like education or past work experience
  • Add a colour theme to your CV that is eye-catching
  • Have someone proofread!

Don't

  • Do not crowd your CV with information that is irrelevant to the position you are seeking
  • Do not use a pre-formatted CV as is; make it personal!
  • Do not have spelling mistakes
  • Gender, health status, marital and parental status are unnecessary!
